- deposited a check without endorsing it
- misplaced all christmas present receipts (including gift receipts)
- made up a new word - logisticize
- left the house without my purse/diaper bag and had to turn around to go back and get it
- called mike "mom"
- baked the banana bread at 400, when it should be 325 (and i have used this recipe at least 7 times this year)
- forgot where i parked my car after a trip to the movies
- forgot a very good friend's name during an introduction

it's official, i have baby brain
[enter mom] i had heard from many moms that baby brain does indeed happen starting from as early as month 8 in pregnancy. i actually felt pretty on top of things while i was pregnant, but my brain has quickly gone down hill since olivia came into the world. just to give you an idea of what my life is like these days, here are some examples of my "baby brain":

wow, what a christmas party
i had a lot of fun last night. i got to see all of mom and dad's friends. in fact, i didn't see my mom or my dad for a couple of hours. it was pretty cool meeting everyone. i even managed to fall asleep in aunt beth's arms. i recognized a few people from before, namely kate b., neille, bizzy and sarah, but it was nice to cuddle with tamara, traci, mark and chirag. i am sure i cuddled with more people, but i cannot remember them all. i am still recovering today from being so social.
i must say, though, it did get a bit overwhelming by the end and i had a minor meltdown. thankfully mom and dad took me to my bed and created a nice little quiet zone for me. i could still hear Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" playing downstairs, but i kinda liked that.
oh, and watching mom and dad prep was fun. they explained how to make quiche, banana bread and artichoke dip while they were cooking. and mom threw in some tips for hosting parties. i like having them explain that kinda stuff to me.
[enter mom] the party was the perfect start to the holiday season for us...and it was great to have a steady stream of peeps throughout the night. it never felt too out of control (except maybe when i got a bit ahead of myself with maxing the volume on the Journey cd).
we did discover that we owned the world's worst christmas record. it had tracks from the likes of Randy Travis (that's a shocker, mike). oh, and DJ Rope-a-Dope (aka Roper) debuted. he played some great tracks, though the stevie wonder track he pulled out was about the worst stevie wonder track in the history of the universe. i didn't realize that stevie sunk to those depths during his musical career.
and i want to give a shout out to everyone who brought food/drink. i wish i had taken a photo of the table. we had added the insert to it to make sure we would fit it all and we still had food piling up in the kitchen. zoe even made doughnuts during the party. and one of the biggest hits was claudine's apple tart. people were talking about that tart all over the house. and the spread of cookies was outrageous. mike and i went a bit overboard with cooking as well, but it was fun.
our latest thing is to bring olivia into the kitchen and tell her what we are creating. we find that if we talk to her while we are making it, then she feels included and is less likely to get fussy.

yep, that's right...this is a pic of me and lincoln cold kickin' it. i'm not sure what he is trying to do with his hand,. but i thought the best way to handle it was break into a dance.
me and aunt kate b
aunt kate b came over for dinner and we had a lot of fun. i like it when she holds me. i hope she comes over again soon!

my new snowsuit
nana sent me a new snowsuit from new zealand. it fits, but only just. it kept me very warm on my walk today. and i know it looks like it is too tight around my neck, but i promise you, it's not. my double chin is just protruding more than usual these days :)
[enter mom] we love the snowsuit! thanks nana.....

my first hike, well sorta
today we went for a hike in discovery park. it was really cold, but a lot of fun! we walked around for 2 hours looking at the trees and stuff. then we went down to the beach. the ocean breeze was chilly, but it felt very refreshing. about 10 minutes into the hike i lost my booty. mom and dad did not notice it for awhile. my foot got REALLY cold. once they did, dad warmed my foot with his hand and they went on a hunt to find it. luckily, it was still on the trail.
[enter mom] the hike was great! we were going to go to little mt. si, but decided to stay local and do something like that next weekend. when we get back from florida, we plan on taking her snowshoeing. we are really looking forward to that.

keep on rollin'
i finally did it. well, i had done it a couple of times several weeks ago, but i don't really think those count. this time i meant it. i rolled over. after about 22 minutes on my stomach, i rolled over to my back and then smiled really big. and kept smiling because it felt kinda good. my world goes one of two ways...face down during belly time or face up when i am on my back or being held by mom, dad and their friends. it was pretty neat to watch the world go from back to front in one fell swoop.
however, it gets better. last night when aunt kate b. was over, i rolled from my back to my stomach. that was pretty cool. i had been rolling from my back to my side for some time now, but to go all the way was a totally new experience.
[enter mom] yes, the last 48 hours have been pretty exciting with the lil' bird (i call her that from time to time). just in the last week, we have noticed some new strength. mike has been in DC on business (he is a big time dealmaker now), so Olivia and I have spent time hanging with friends and working on the rollover. oh, and watching 80s movies. we watched some kind of wonderful last night. man, the 80s were an intense time in the movie world. i love it!
she really misses dad. the first night is always a little tough because she realizes that he is not going to be coming home. this means she is quite needy. i have to hold her for most of the evening until she goes down for bed. i don't mind if i don't have things to do. cooking dinner with one hand has become my latest mom skill. i had no idea what i could make with only one hand....mac and cheese, soups, etc...

My first snow
There's this white stuff falling from the sky. I don't know quite what to make of it, but I like that it's keeping mommy and daddy inside to cuddle with me. I'm curious what it's like outside in the snow. I heard M+D talking about going to dinner tonight, so I just might find out...
2 Month Check-up
If you can believe it, I actually like going to the doctors. Dr. D is awesome and she is so funny and laid back. On my last visit, they took all my clothes off to weigh me and I peed on Dr.D. I didn't mean to...just got caught up in the moment. I now weight 9 lbs 8oz! I have also grown 4 inches since I was born (now i am 22.5 in). Pretty excited about that. I kept hearing my mom and Dr.D talk about me being a banana baby. Interestingly, most of my weight is going to my head. It is in the 40th percentile compared to the 25-30 percentile on everything else. I had to get 2 shots as well (4 different immunizations in 2 shots) and it wasn't bad at all. I didn't even cry.
[enter mom] i actually had a hard time watching the shots. i cannot even bear to watch it with the cats, so you can imagine how i felt watching the needles go into my daughter's thigh.
i was actually quite relieved after the doctor visit. i have been concerned that she has not been gaining enough weight (and she hadn't been) so i started taking fenugreek to increase my milk supply. goodness me, did i manage to increase it. i can spray almost 2 feet now. pretty proud of that fact. it's amazing what you want to talk about once you have a baby....breastmilk, diapers, sleep and poop.

Me and the Kitty
I have been noticing these furry creatures moving about the house since I got here. They come by every so often and sniff me out, but we don't really hang out (except in this photo and one time on mom's chest). There are 2 kitties roaming the premises. The other one is a tabby color and he hangs out upstairs a lot more than the white one does. I think their names are Huxley and Miss Wilson. I hear Mom and Dad talking in very high pitched voices to them. Sometimes it hurts my ears.
[enter mom] the cats are slowly but surely warming up to the new addition to our family. we still lock huxley out of the bedroom at night because we are not totally confident that he will stay out of the co-sleeper. we have caught him sleeping in there a few times and since he weighs so much, we don't want to risk him jumping in when she is there. miss wilson will at least hang in the same room with olivia now. for awhile, she wasn't even coming home but once a day.

Daddy's Hand is Nice...
There seem to be a lot of photos of me in daddy's hand. i can't believe that my head actually fits in his palm. he has such a warm hand and his arm is nice and hairy.

Talking
Sometimes when I'm feeling alert (like in this photo) I like to play games with Mom and Dad. I am teaching them my language. I say words and they repeat them back. So far I'm teaching them to say "Hooo eh", "Bruuuugh" and "Oooooo". They're not very good at this game though, and keep saying things like "Ma-Ma", "Da-Da", and "Hello". I am patient with them though.

I heart the movies
Yes, that's right. I have been to 2 movies this week. I really like going to the movies. The sound is loud enough to put me to sleep and it is nice and dark in the theatre. Mom took me to see American Gangster and Lions for Lambs. We saw American Gangster at the Columbia City Cinema and I was the only baby there. I think mom was a bit nervous about whether or not I would cry because she told the other people in the theatre that Tuesdays matinee showing was the parent/baby showing. Luckily I played it cool. I did get hungry, but she just popped me on the boob and I went back into my stupor.
Today we went to Lincoln Square to see Lions for Lambs with mom's friend Bree and my friend Metzly. We even carpooled together which was fun. Once we got to the movies though, the elevator was broken. So, mom and Bree had to maneuver up and down an escalator with the car seat and stroller. I actually thought Mom might drop me since she doesn't like escalators. Once we got to the theatre, Metzly and I slept entire time! I could tell Bree and Mom were proud because they wouldn't stop talking about how good we were.
[enter mom] going to movies rocks! seriously, it helps pass the days when it is raining or if you have already done your big walk of the day. i felt a little weird being the only mom with a baby at the columbia city cinema because the other people there would not have known that it is ok to bring a screaming baby. luckily, olivia played it cool on both trips.
riding an escalator with strollers/car seats/diaper bags is kinda dodgy, but the elevator was broken so we had no choice. i pulled the car seat off the stroller and carried the 2 items separately. note to self, don't do that again. it definitely felt unstable. that said, keeping the baby in the car seat if they are already sleeping is key when going to the movies. the babies who were pulled out and held or put in a wrap/front pack carrier all cried! sure, its nice to cuddle with the little one when watching a movie, but i would sacrifice the cuddle for some peace and quiet during the film. plus, they get a good nap in which means all the more awake time for me when we get home. awake time = smiles and giggles and singing.
and it was great to carpool. bree was able to put her car seat in my car without the base.
I will post pics of our adventure once I get them....

Car Seat + Shopping = No good
[enter mom] I just got back from walking around Columbia City and I must say, lugging the car seat around is totally ghetto. Not only am I pulling every muscle in my upper body, I am knocking into things left, right and center. I chose *not* to wear Olivia because I wanted to go to Andaluz for a quick shop (ie try clothes on). Note to self, if you don't have the stroller ready and waiting, then don't go. My car is in the shop gettin' fixed up and Mike's car uses a car seat that does not have the stroller attachment. Oh well, lesson learned. I did get Olivia some cute stuff from Sweet Pea's second hand and had a yummy scone from the world's most overpriced bakery.
PS not sure shopping for me is such a good idea so soon after the birth. maybe i should stick to places like The Gap until i get back in shape. Breastfeeding = need a lot more space up top...Yowsers!

Afternoon Naps with Mom
I love napping in the afternoon with Mom. She puts me on the big bed and we both fall asleep together. Obviously she is not asleep yet since she is taking photos of me. Is it normal for people to take photos of other people sleeping? Seems kinda funny to me.
[enter mom] I have to agree with Olivia on this one...it is fabulous to fall asleep with her in the late afternoon. She has such a sweet face when she sleeps. So innocent! I like to snuggle up real close and have her breathing pattern lull me to sleep.

My Left Hand!
I am really starting to discover my hands. I seem to be putting them in my mouth all the time and flailing them around.
PS I love my purple kimono onesie. Aunt Kate B. gave me a blue on for the summer that I also love.

Big Time Smiles
Mom totally got up in my grill yesterday with the camera and I am a little surprised that she decided to post this one. Of all the shots, she chose the one with my double chin. I know how she is about double chins and photos which is why I am curious to know how this one made it to the website. And just so you know, I am not storing walnuts in my cheeks :) Mom is just feeding me ALL THE TIME!
That said, it was a lot of fun sitting on her knees while she made different noises to see what kind of expression I could make. Once I threw this one at her, it was all over. She even called Dad to tell him how cute I was being.
[enter mom] It's important to embrace the double chin early on, HA! Anyhoo, photoshoots with Olivia are a great way to pass the time. Seriously, I could photograph her all day. I want to start getting arty farty with it and do a set in black and white.

Me and My Car Seat
Yes, that is my very own car seat. Pretty cool, huh? Mopm and Dad recently added some extra cushion and I must say, it makes all the difference in the world. The ride is so smooth and very warm. I usually become a bit of a brat when I get into the car seat, but once it is all said and done, I fall straight to sleep or I just chill out looking at all the things around me.
I really like it when Mom plays the music kinda loud. It reminds me of when I was in her belly. She tends to sing a lot too. It makes me laugh when she doesn't know the words, which is more often than not.
[enter mom] Yes, that's right. I love to sing in the car, but I never REALLY know the words. Only know some of them and then either fake it or make up my only lyrics. It's weird. I am one of those people who only listens to drums/guitar/bass/voice sounds, but never really listens to the lyrics.
I am intentionally playing Olivia a lot of music in these early days of her life. Everything from Beethoven to Philip Glass to Arvo Part to Radiohead and Thee More Shallows. I think exposure to different musical tones is important. And she responds well to music. It seems to help her calm down when she is worked up or keeps her calm when she is just staring into space (which she does a lot of now).

Busy, Busy
Wow, Mom really packs our days with things to do. We've been to the u-district where we went shoe shopping and got a falafel. There were lots of people around, but I only opened my eyes for a bit to check the scene before falling back to sleep. I decided to play it cool in my stroller the whole time. We also went to Pharmica and a really bad shoe store that was WAY too warm and a woman kept gettin' up in my grill which was a little annoying.
Yesterday we went to our first mom and baby yoga class. Again, I laid low in my car seat. It was so warm in the studio, but it was a little annoying to hear the crying sounds (enter mom: i think i am projecting here). Do I sound that bad? I don't know if mom will take us back again. After class we went to Aunt Kate's house. I managed to open my eyes a bit while they were talking, but I think I was tired from not having a feed for almost 4 hours. Mom can get a little crazy sometimes.
Oh, and I went over to Roger, Gina and Lincoln's house. I had heard a lot about Lincoln from my parents but had not met him yet. He has amazing eyelashes. And I could hear my mom doing a lot of cooing and it wasn't directed at me. Oh well, can't have it all the time, I suppose.
[enter mom] I must say, I am really enjoying exploring the town with Olivia. I try and explore a different place each week. Helps me get more confidence with traveling about with her and dealing with the whole car seat/stroller transition or moving her from the car seat to a sling/moby etc...We have yet to feed outside the comfort of our home. I hope to do it soon though. I think once I break the ice, then it won't seem so daunting.
I like the concept up mom/baby yoga, but I am not sure it is for me. Yoga is my only real "me" time and to share it with other crying babies felt a bit off. I had a hard time concentrating and fully relaxing. I think I would prefer to do the mom/baby poses at home and stick to my 3 day per week practice at Samadhi. That way, I get a break from the babe and come back refreshed.
And it was fabulous to finally meet Lincoln. R+G have done a great job of making the living room feel very peaceful so the baby can sleep. It was nice to see our babies hanging out, even if they have no idea that the other exists.

I love sunshine - Seward Park
Today we went to seward park for a walk with other mommies from the mt. baker neighborhood. the weather was absolutely gorgeous - brisk autumn air, sunshine and not a cloud in the sky. I love going for walks in my stroller. Though, my face did get really cold.
[enter mom] I must say, meeting with other mothers is quite nice. It's good to compare war stories of having a newborn in your life. Whether it is breastfeeding issues, sleep (or lack thereof), dad's participation or diaper changes, it's nice to know I am not alone in this new phase of my life.
Walking is going to be my new obsession, I think. Since it is really the only exercise I can do with her, I guess I will be doing a lot of it. Seward Park is a nice option because it has a wide path (easily fits 3 strollers across) and a good sized loop (without the hills). And there are benches conveniently placed along the way should Olivia need to feed.

Night time w/ Dad
Daddy likes to take photos of us at night. I feel like I might be a little clued out in this photo, but that's cool. I can handle it. I have a feeling I have been keeping daddy up for quite some time tonight. In fact, I secretly like to do that so I can spend more time with him.
Hangin' w/ Nana
I really liked hanging out with Nana while she was here. We spent a lot of time together. She loves to take photos (and she is a good photographer to boot). I always tried to look my cutest for her ;)
[enter mom] Nana took lots of photos...now we just need to upload them to our flickr account and blog about them.

Sleepin' on Mom
Well, if I cannot sit inside her belly, then sitting on her chest will do. We did a lot of this in our first few weeks. It was nice. I tend to squirm around a lot because I am figuring out the different energy patterns in my body. Sometimes it freaks me and mommy out when I make really sudden movements.
[enter mom] I actually think I put on my "i am fake sleeping" for the camera. But, Olivia is right, we did do a lot of this and I actually did fall asleep, surprisingly. You'd think having a newborn on your chest would keep you up, but the exhaustion of keeping up with the feeding schedule meant sleep came easily. Some of my favorite moments are when we sleep together.

Walking with Nana, Mom and Dad in Mt. Baker
I quite like sitting in the sling that daddy wears. But, I am a little overwhelmed by all the new stuff in the world so I have to cover my eyes.
My First Bath...
Wow, I can fit in a sink. The water is very nice and warm, but not as nice as inside mommy's belly.
[enter mom] Olivia decided to do some big meconium poops during her first bath at the hospital (group health in seattle).

Belly Time - An hour old
I am only an hour or so old here. Being on my belly felt really weird. Now mom and dad put me on my belly a lot. It helps make my neck strong which is a good thing. I get sick of it floppin' around all the time.
My First Smile...
I am smiling because I am only a couple of days old and Daddy is really nice. His hands are so big...it's a little scary.
[enter mom] This shot was taken only a few days after Miss Olivia's birth. She likes to smile. A lot.

This shot was taken only moments after I was born...I came out screaming and the doctors put me directly on mommy's chest. Not sure what those big mounds are, but it feels very different from where I have been for the last 9 months.
Mom labored for 33 hours and I managed to keep my cool while she was trying to get me out.
[enter mom] ummmm....note to self, take the drugs sooner next time. 25 hours natural, 8 pumped with drugs. She came out in 9 pushes (22 minutes). Yikes.
